It's so big!!!

Ah Japan summer. Where it's so hot you can smell the garbage cooking as it waits in the dead heat for uniformed men to carry it away. In this unbearable heat two insects flourish. While both are "harmless" most people can't stand either.
The first, the nimble cockroach. While in America they survive in swarms, it's not uncommon to see them terrorizing Japan's residents all by their lonesome. They are noticeably bigger than their American counterparts as well and come in a lush brown or black. Some, believe it or not, can even fly. Talk about a nightmare waiting to happen. While typically they thrive in the filthiest of places, an open window or door may help you to meet this unwelcome guest in even the most spotless residence.
The second, the loud and fat cicada. This creature lives in trees and makes that loud prolonged chirping noise you may be used to hearing either if you live here or have seen a Japanese anime. However, the anime's don't give you the true sound of this pest. For a real sample, click here and turn your speakers up. This sample is just from one cicada. Imagine hundreds.
The cicada's life span is actually very short. So along with their noise we must also tread lightly for fear of trodding on the dead and not-so-dead bodies that litter the streets and walkways. But never kick a cicada while they're down. You may get a surprise when they rise from their resting place and fly wildly away (or towards you).
Well typhoon season is almost upon us. But if it brings cool weather and death to most of the creepy-crawlies, I'll take the typhoon please.
P.S. The music info has been updated on the right side of the blog. Pretty, isn't it?
